Finding a Brick and Mortar

Finding a Brick and Mortar

I was sweating that I wouldn’t be able to find a location for the yarn store. Thankfully that hasn’t turned out to be the case, but I didn’t know that last week.

With the way Oshawa has been developing in the North end, and changing in Centennial (Center), I thought finding an accessible store property would be easy. It wasn’t, for several reasons:

  • Lack of options (didn’t see that coming)
  • Pricing being outside my budget. However many listing were worded oddly making me think I may be able to afford the property
    • Example: $25/monthly, it really means $25 per sqft and the listing includes an estimate. It’s not even the exact sqft.
  • Only stairs to access the unit, no elevator or ramp.
  • TMI, and no it’s not ‘Too Much Information’. Try ‘Taxes, Maintenance, and Insurance’ applied on top of your own insurance and HST.

Finally I found a place, love it! I’ll share more on that later as the struggle wasn’t over just yet.

The lease agreement was similar to that of leasing an apartment, more or less, but it didn’t keep the realtor and myself from going back and forth several times with suggested edits. The below quote is very real.

ALWAYS read the fine print

— Hopefully everyone

The advisor at the bank asked if I wanted a set of starter cheques, we were joking about who uses cheques with auto-withdrawals, e-transfers, and PayPal being so popular. I am very glad I took them because it turns out paying for the unit isn’t that streamlined. I have never written so many post-dated cheques in my life!

Despite all of the small bumps above I am thrilled with the unit I found. It will be a workout and a half to renovate. But I can’t wait! Excited to optimally display all the squishy yarn and fibre art goodies.

I even started to daydream and draw out how I would like to decorate.
